The California Digital Library is negotiating for comprehensive new agreements with publishers which will govern both access to content and open access publishing for University of California researchers. Because these agreements cover more than a traditional subscription license, expanded efforts in data analysis are necessary to understand the environment that CDL is moving into, develop strategies for transitioning towards open access, support discussions with publishers and information providers, and understand the potential outcomes and impacts – both positive and negative – of agreements under consideration.
This session will describe the strategies and tools that CDL has developed to undertake these analyses, show examples of how the insights gleaned from these analyses have impacted CDL’s negotiations and communications to date, and discuss how this work can be replicated at other institutions that wish to better understand their environment in order to develop their own strategies for advancing openness in scholarly communications.
