The demand from academic researchers for access to increasingly large and complex databases in news, finance and trade, and statistical information (population, geospatial, etc.) are stretching the limits of licensing practices at academic institutions. Providers of such resources traditionally cater to non-academic consumers and often lack the transparency required to appropriately evaluate the resources for the academic audience. Challenges include:
• Determining database scope: Content in large aggregations is often obscured by vendor merging of data with proprietary analytical tools and services
• Measuring database value: It is difficult to measure the overlap of content and value of added functionality between commercial databases and freely available data (e.g., from government/NGO sites)
• Obtaining suitable terms of use: Specialized researcher needs and idiosyncratic vendor terms of service challenge established license models.

Focusing on the needs of library e-resource and collection-development specialists who make decisions on the acquisition of expensive commercial databases, presenters from the Center for Research Libraries and ccAdvisor will highlight some of the recent challenges in navigating the marketplace of “Big Data” and will suggest measures to counteract vendor opacity through greater community investment in analysis of the products and providers.
